Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships

All-USA College Academic Team. All-USA College Academic Team is open to full-time undergraduates at four-year institutions in the USA and its territories. The criteria are designed to find students who excel in scholarship and in leadership roles. Letters of recommendation are required. Selected students receive $2,500. To receive a nomination form, send a self- addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope specifying the All-USA College Academic Team to: Carol Skalski, USA TODAY, 7950 Jones Branch Dr., McLean, VA 22108-9995. http://www.allstars.usatoday.com. Applications will be available in September and are due in mid-November.

Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics. A total of $10,000 in first, second, and third prizes and two honorable mentions are awarded annually. Applicants must be full-time juniors or seniors and must submit a 3,000-4,000 word essay in the form of a case study, a personal experience, or an analysis that deals with an ethical dilemma. This year's suggested topics are as follows: Reflect on the most profound moral dilemma you have encountered and analyze what it has taught you about ethics and yourself. Examine the ethical aspects or implications of a major literary work, a film, or a significant piece of art. What is the relation between religion and ethics in today's world? How can ethics transform for the better a community, institution, or nation? What is the relationship between genocide and ethics? Jeanette Rankin Foundation. Awards of up to $2,000 are given annually to low-income women undergraduate students who have a vision of how their education will benefit themselves, their families, and their communities. Applicants must be aged 35 or older. Selection is based on financial need. Applications will be available in November 2005. Download application at http://www.rankinfoundation.org.

The UCSB Alumni Legacy Scholarship was created to support children, step-children, grandchildren, and or step-grandchildren of UCSB Alumni Association members through membership dues paid by members of the UCSB Alumni Association. The UCSB Alumni Legacy Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate commitment to the excellence of UCSB and the community through academic achievements, leadership, and involvement in campus clubs and organizations. Application available at Applications are due on November 30, 2005.

URCA Administered Scholarships and Awards

University grants are available through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities office for student-initiated research and creative projects done under UCSB faculty supervision, including research for departmental honors programs. Attend a workshop on applying for grants on October 5 at 4:00 p.m. in the UCen Santa Barbara Harbor Room or October 11 at 4:00 p.m. in the UCen Flying A Studios room. Harry S. Truman Fellowship supports study beginning in the senior year of college and extending through two or three years of graduate study, for students who intend careers in government, the nonprofit sector, or elsewhere in public service. Applications are available online at http://www.Truman.gov. Campus deadline is January 11, 2006.

Barry Goldwater Scholarship. For sophomores or juniors interested in a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Applications are available online at www.act.org/goldwater . Campus application deadline is January 1, 2006.

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers a full-time postbaccalaureate fellowship providing total immersion in international affairs topics such as international economic reform, democracy building, and nuclear nonproliferation. Campus application deadline is November 28, 2005. http://www.ceip.org

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans. Supports two years of graduate study for students who are either holders of green cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents. Campus deadline for endorsement: October 4, 2005. http://www.pdsoros.org

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship. Awarded annually to outstanding students from across the nation. Provides up to $50,000 annually for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books for up to six years for students pursuing graduate or professional degrees. Campus deadline is March 27, 2006. http://www.jackkentcookefoundation.org

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who either (1) study the environment and related fields; or (2) are Native Americans or Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal public policy. Campus deadline is January 27, 2006. http://www.udall.gov

The Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship Foundation annually awards fifteen $10,000 scholarships to California college juniors who have demonstrated an interest in public service, have outstanding leadership potential, can demonstrate effective communication skills, and wish to "make a difference" in local, regional or national communities. Campus deadline is January 27, 2006. http://www.straussfoundation.org

The Beinecke Scholarship program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated undergraduate students (juniors) particularly those in the arts, humanities or social sciences to pursue graduate school opportunities. Each scholar receives $2,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Campus application deadline is January 27, 2006. http://www.beineckescholarship.org

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide undergraduates with the resources and encouragement needed to acquire skills and experience in less commonly studied languages and cultures. Applicants must engage in a study abroad program that meets UCSB standards. Depending on financial need, awards may cover up to $10,000 of the costs of the study abroad program. Students must be U.S. citizens to apply. The application is available at http://www.iie.org. Campus application deadline is January 11, 2006.
