2004-05 Kirby-Jones Scholarship Winners: Dedicated to Making the World a Better PlaceSeveral years ago, Marvel and Robert Kirby generously endowed a scholarship for students in the College Honors Program. The scholarship recognizes students of outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the campus and community. Winners for 2004-05 were and Michelle Miller and Cheyne Scoby, two students wit h fine records of accomplishment and service. Michelle Miller is a sophomore math major. Her record of service includes being active on the Anacapa Hall Council, Student Unity Now, and the A.S. Legislative Council, where she was elected to the position of On-Campus Representative. She has also worked with the Isla Vista Youth Projects, the Santa Barbara Convalescent Home, Friendship Manor, the Special Olympics, the Residence Hall Association, and the Regents and Chancellors Scholar Society. In recognition of her contributions to both the local and campus communities, the Community Affairs Board named her Volunteer of the Month for March 2005. Michelle is an active member of the College Honors Program, having participated in the Peer Mentor Program as an incoming student. She enjoyed her honors sections as a lower-division student and is now doing an honors contract in complex analysis. Cheyne Scoby is a physics major who hopes to complete a graduate degree that will lead to a postdoctoral position at a university laboratory and ultimately a university professorship. His field of interest is experimental particle physics. Cheyne has already begun working toward his future career by interning as an undergraduate research assistant in the California Nanosystems Institute, located on the UCSB campus. He also works for the Student Opportunity and Access Program organization, tutoring math and science at two Santa Barbara high schools. Passionate about music, Cheyne is a long-time volunteer with various choral groups, including the Santa Barbara Choral Society, Opera Santa Barbara, and the UCSB chamber choir. Cheyne especially likes being part of the Letters and Science Honors Program. He describes his fellow students there as łnot just my friends, but also . . . my colleagues, as we drive toward similar educational goals.˛ Congratulations, Michelle and Cheyne! |
