Scholarships

Announcing the 7th Annual Kirby-Jones Scholarships.

Three $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to two students in the College of L&S Honors Program who will have junior standing by the end of spring 2005. Applicants must have graduated from a high school in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, or Kern Counties or have been long-term residents of one of these counties. The awards are based on academic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities. Applications will be available in spring 20o5 in the college office.

ACIL Scholarship Alliance. To encourage future generations of skilled employees, the Scholarship Alliance annually offers $2,000 academic scholarships to students planning scientific or engineering careers. Candidates must have at least junior standing and must be majoring in physics, chemistry, engineering, geology, biology, or environmental science. Information about the 2005-2006 scholarships will be available on the website in early 2005. Contact: www.acil.org

Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship. For junior-level students who will graduate within one year of application and who will pursue graduate studies in the liberal arts. The award is made on the basis of intellectual ability, personal promise, and documented need. Award consists of $2,000 to defray costs of applications and travel to graduate schools and up to $30,000 for graduate school support. campus guidelines and applications are available in North Hall 2105 and are due January 28, 2005.

CTA Scholarship for Dependent Children. Twenty- five $2,000 scholarships will be awarded by the California Teachers Association. Applicants must be the dependent child of an active, retired, or deceased member. Applications must be postmarked by February 8. Donald A. Strauss Scholarship. Candidates for this $10,000 scholarship are nominated on the basis of outstanding leadership potential and demonstrated service to community. Open to juniors in the upper third of their class. An essential part of the applications is a proposal for a community project that is to be completed during the senior year. Faculty Women's Club Scholarships of four at $1000 each and one for $1500 are available to full-time sophomores and juniors now enrolled at UCSB. All students must have been enrolled for at least three quarters and must plan to enroll full time at UCSB for the academic year 2005-2006. To apply, write a one-page statement describing your current and future goals, volunteer activities, work experience, honors society affiliations, and other pertinent information. Applications are due on Wednesday, April 13, two weeks after the start of the spring quarter. Include an unofficial transcript through winter 2005 that includes your perm number an social security number (copies from GOLD are not acceptable), local address, phone number, and e-mail address where you can be reached during April, May, and summer 2005. Include your permanent address and phone number as well. Winners of the 2005 scholarships need to verify their enrollment for the fall of 2005 and attend the presentation ceremony in the fall. Grants for Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects . Funding is available to support small-cost undergraduate projects, including research, creative works, and research-related travel that will be conducted in winter or spring quarters. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Program offers fellowships for future teachers supporting one or two years of graduate study leading to a master's degree in American history or political science, a master of arts in teaching in those areas, or a related master's degree in education. Applicants should be seniors or recent graduates who intend to pursue careers as teachers. Applications are due March 1, 2005. Call (800) 525-6928 for information, or visit www.jamesmadison.com.

Jeanette Rankin Foundation grants $2,000 awards to mature women to further their education. The first woman elected to Congress, Jeannette Rankin, championed suffrage, peace, and democracy. The foundation named in her honor makes awards annually to undergraduate students with limited financial resources. Applicants must be at least 35 years old. Applications and recommendation forms are available on the Web at www.rankinfoundation.org. Deadline: March 1, 2005.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships. The Udall Foundation awards eighty undergraduate scholarship of up to $5,000 to juniors and seniors in fields related to the environment, and to Native American and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal policy. The Phillips Foundation Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding students who are promoting American values on college campuses. Last year, the Foundation awarded $259,000 in scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year. Applicants may apply during their sophomore year. Winners will receive the grant for their junior year and may apply for renewal before their senior year. Outstanding juniors may also apply for a one-time award for their senior year. Applicants must submit a 500-750 word essay. Application must be postmarked by January 15, 2005. www.thephillipsfoundation.org/futureleaders.htm

Rotary International. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships for study in foreign countries. Applications dates vary. Information: www.rotary.org/foundation/education/amb_scho/index.html

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund. Five $10,000 scholarships and 50 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to women. Based on financial need and previous achievements for women who earned their high school diploma or GED at least ten years ago. Deadline: January 13, 2005 or until the first 1,000 eligible applications have been received. www.talbots.com/about/scholar/scholar.asp

The Jack Cooke Graduate Scholarship. Awarded annually to outstanding students from across the nation. Institutions may nominate up to two seniors or alumni who have graduated within the last five years and who have not yet begin a graduate program. The awards provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books up to $50,000 annually for up to six years. Scholarship length and amounts will vary for each recipient based on several factors, including costs to the institution he or she attends and the degree sought. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or abroad to pursue any graduate degree or any professional degree including medicine, law, or business.
