Residence Hall Scholars Floors: For Students who Take Academics SeriouslySelf-motivated, independent, resourceful, disciplined - that's how senior business economics major Bryan Jones describes the typical student living on the men's Anacapa scholars floor, where he serves as resident assistant (RA). But although these students are very mindful of their time and take their academics seriously, they don't forget to strive for balance in their lives. "These students have good social lives," Bryan explains, "and there is a fun atmosphere on the floor." Erin Perez, a third-year global studies major who serves as RA on the Anacapa women's scholars floor, agrees that even though students chose to live on her floor to be with peers who share their passion for studying and doing well scholastically, they are well-rounded people, interested in sports and service as well as scholarship. " I constantly see my residents studying in the lounges," she says, " but I also see them coming back from an intramural soccer game, from a club or service organization meeting, or from surfing." Scholars floors are reserved for Regents Scholars and students who have qualified for the College of Letters and Science Honors Program or College of Engineering Honors, or who have been accepted to the College of Creative Studies. Activities include dinners with faculty, study groups, and social events. Spaces available in scholars floors include 100 in Anacapa, 60 in Francisco Torres, 50 in San Nicolas, and 60 in Manzanita Village, plus a College of Creative Studies house for 40 in Manzanita Village. How to apply:First-year students who submit an SIR can download the residence hall contract from http://www.housing.ucsb.edu. Filling out the online personal preference questionnaire is part of completing the contract. On the questionnaire, students may request special interest housing, including the scholars floors.
