WINTER 2008, Volume 21, Number 1
Student Honors Coordinator Positions Available
As winter quarter begins, I would like to let you know about a great opportunity for honors students. In the latter part of the quarter, we will be hiring a new Student Honors Coordinator, as I will be graduating in the spring. So I would like to take the chance to give you an inside look at what the job entails through my own experiences. I was offered the job at the end of my sophomore year and was quite nervous about my new position; however, one of the quickest things I learned about this job was the help available once you start here. Regina Fletcher, the honors staff, and the Letters and Science advising office gave me tremendous advice and support in helping me adjust with my new responsibilities. Expectations are high for the Student Honors Coordinator, but the staff at the College is there to help you. You will be trained extensively on Letters and Science academic policies and procedures, campus resources, the honors program, and advising practices. Each day brings something new so I always find myself asking questions. It is a constant learning process, and the advising staff will always be there to help. A typical day usually involves having appointments with students. Each appointment you get is different which keeps you on your toes. You get questions concerning general education requirements, the honors program, majors and minors, petitions, and student life. Students will also contact you through email with their questions. Aside from appointments and emails, we get the chance to work on honors events and projects, write articles for newsletters on the honor website, and run advising sessions for students in the residence halls. This is the part of the job that allows you to be creative in programs you wish to put on. You may have heard of some of these programs with “Coffee and Concepts” and “Interdisciplinary Perspectives.” As Student Honors Coordinator, the honors staff will encourage you to start and create such events. Personally, I have grown a lot from this job. It has asked me to do a number of things that I would not have considered doing in the past. One of my favorite things that I have done is speak at the regional reception in northern California last March. I sat on a panel of faculty, staff, and other students and took questions from approximately 600 prospective students and parents. Getting a chance to speak with parents and students about their concerns and questions of the college life was very rewarding, especially once you speak with a students saying it was because of your presentation that they chose to attend UCSB. Along with advising other students, organizing events with professors, and giving presentations to students, it has helped me mature both professionally and socially. I encourage you to apply for this job as I can guarantee you will not regret it. You may be wonderings about what sort of qualities we look for when hiring someone for the position. While we do not have a checklist for the position, we look for students who are highly motivated, active within the honors program, respectful, and easy to work with. If you have any questions about the position, feel free to send me an email at shcblue@LTSC.ucsb.edu. I wish you good luck with your winter quarter and I hope to see your applications in February. Signed, Dustin May Informational Meetings for Letters and Science Peer Advisors and Student Honors Coordinator will be held Wednesday, January 23rd at 3:00 p.m. and Thursday, January 24th at 3:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the UCen Lobero Room. Applications for the position will be due Friday, February 15th. |
