Scholarships


Eighth Annual Kirby-Jones Scholarships.
Four $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to students in the College of L&S Honors Program who will have junior standing by the end of spring 2008. Applicants must have graduated from a high school in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, or Kern Counties or have been long-term residents of one of these counties. The awards are based on academic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities. Applications will be available in spring 2008 in the college office.

ACIL Scholarship Alliance. To encourage future generations of skilled employees, the ACIL Scholarship Alliance annually offers academic scholarships up to $4,000 to students planning scientific or engineering careers. Candidates must be have junior standing and must also be majoring in physics, chemistry, engineering, geology, biology, or environmental science. Scholarship awards are based on the applicant's academic achievement, career goals, leadership, and financial need. Deadline is April 4, 2008.Information about the 2008-2009 application is available on the website www.acil.org.

Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship. For junior-level students who will graduate within one year of application and who will pursue graduate studies in the liberal arts. The award is made on the basis of intellectual ability, personal promise, and documented financial need. Award consists of $2,000 to defray costs of applications and travel to graduate schools and up to $30,000 for graduate school support. CTA Scholarship for Dependent Children. Twenty-five $2,000 scholarships will be awarded by the California Teachers Association. Applicants must be the dependent child of an active, retired, or deceased member. Applications are due by February 8th. Contact: www.cta.org or CTA Human Rights (650) 552-5370.

Donald A. Strauss Scholarship. Candidates for this $10,000 scholarship are nominated based on outstanding leadership potential and demonstrated service to community. Open to juniors in the upper third of their class. A proposal for a community project to be completed during the applicant’s senior year is an essential part of the application.  The campus application deadline is February 6, 2008. Areo Saffarzadeh, winner of the 2006 Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship Foundation Award, winner of the 2007 Louise A. and Stephen D. Pahl "Making a Difference" Award, and the Thomas More Storke Award recipient for 2007.


The UCSB Faculty Women's Club (FWC)
will award four (4) scholarships in Fall 2008. Three scholarships will be for $1200; one, in honor of Mary Cheadle, will be for $2000. Current 2007-2008 full-time sophomores and juniors may apply. Applicants must have been enrolled at UCSB for at least three quarters, must submit a transcript showing grades for at least two quarters, and must plan to enroll full time at UCSB for 2008-2009. Minimum GPA is 3.70.
    To apply, write a one-page statement describing your current and future goals, volunteer activities, work experience, honors societies and affiliations, and other pertinent information. Applications are due on Wednesday, April 9. Please include an unofficial transcript through winter 2008 that includes your perm number and Social Security number (copies from GOLD are not acceptable), local address, phone number, and e-mail address where you can be reached during April, May and summer 2008. Winners of the 2008-2009 scholarships need to verify their enrollment for fall 2008 and attend the presentation ceremony in the fall. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Program offers fellowships for future secondary teachers (grades 7-12) supporting one or two years of graduate study leading to a master's degree in American history or political science, a master of arts in teaching in those areas, or a related master's degree in education. Applicants should be seniors or recent graduates. The maximum amount of each award is $24,000, prorated over the individual period of study, thus making the James Madison Fellowship the leading award for secondary level teachers undertaking study of the Constitution. Fellowship payments cover the actual costs of tuition, required fees, books, and room and board but cannot exceed $12,000 per academic year. Normally, Fellows receive less than these maximum amounts. Jeanette Rankin Foundation grants $2,000 awards to mature women to further their education. The first woman elected to Congress, Jeannette Rankin, championed suffrage, peace, and democracy. The foundation named in her honors makes wards annually to undergraduate students with limited financial resources. Applicants must be at least 35 years old.  Applications and recommendation forms are available on the Web at www.rankinfoundation.org. Morris K. Udall Scholarships. The Udall Foundation awards eighty undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to college sophomores and juniors in the current academic year who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment, to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, or to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care. The Phillips Foundation Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding students who are promoting American values on college campuses. Last year, the Foundation awarded $303,500 in scholarships. Applicants may apply during their sophomore year. Winners will receive the grant for their junior year and may apply for renewal before their senior year. Outstanding juniors may also apply for a one-time award for their senior year. Applicants must submit a 500-750 word essay. Application must be postmarked by January 15, 2008. Website: www.thephillipsfoundation.org/

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund. Five $10,000 scholarships and 50 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to women based on financial need and previous achievements for women who earned their high school diploma or GED at least ten years ago. Deadline: January 2, 2008 or until the first 1,000 eligible applications have been received. Website: www.talbots.com/about/scholar/scholar.asp

The Jack Cooke Graduate Scholarship. The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding students from across the nation. UCSB may nominate up to two seniors or alumni who have graduated since May 2003 and have yet to start their graduate studies. The awards provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books up to $50,000 annually for a maximum of six years. Scholarship length and amounts will vary for each recipient based on several factors, including costs to the institution the recipient attends and the degree sought. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or abroad in pursuit of a graduate or professional degree including medicine, law, or business.
