The Capps Center—
NSC Community Internship Program
The Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Religion, Ethics, and Public Life at UCSB and the Nonprofit
Support Center (NSC) are inaugurating an internship and public service program in Santa Barbara involving
“service-learning,” or the integration of study with participation in one of the 900 or so nonprofit
organizations within the area. By giving young people an opportunity to engage in community service,
this program seeks to inspire a new generation of civic leaders. Ten UCSB undergraduates were selected
for this highly competitive, year-long program based on an application and interview process conducted
in the spring quarter, 2008.
Students receive 8 units of course credit and stipends of $2,400 during their junior or senior year. They
are spending the fall quarter in a preparatory seminar entitled “Internship in Social Ethics” taught
by Professor Wade Clark Roof (Director, Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion,
and Public Life and J.F. Rowny Professor of Religion and Society, Department of Religious Studies,
UCSB). Students discuss assigned readings and attend presentations by leaders of local nonprofit or
nongovernmental organizations.
During the winter and spring quarters, students will serve as interns 10 hours per week in a nonprofit
organization in the Santa Barbara area. The NSC will act in partnership with the Capps Center to place
our students with nonprofits in areas of their interests, to coordinate their work as interns, and to
arrange mentorship with senior staff members of the participating nonprofits.
In the spring quarter, they will prepare a research paper supervised by Professor Roof integrating
their studies and experience. Participants will be paid half of their stipends after fulfilling the fall and
winter quarter requirements and the other half of their stipend upon finishing the requirements for
the spring quarter. At the end of the academic year, each “class” of students will participate in a year-end “graduation” where they will share their experiences with classmates, other students interested in
applying to the program, and community members who have underwritten internships.
The Capps Center - NSC Community Internship Program is being supported through a grant from the
Santa Barbara Foundation as well as gifts from private donors.
