Scholarships
Ninth Annual Kirby-Jones Scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded to students in the College of L&S Honors Program who will have junior standing by the end of spring 2009. Applicants must have graduated from a high school in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, or Kern Counties or have been long-term residents of one of these counties. The awards are based on academic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities. Applications will be available in spring 2009 in the college office.
ACIL Scholarship Alliance. To encourage future generations of skilled employees, the ACIL Scholarship Alliance annually offers academic scholarships up to $4,000 to students planning scientific or engineering careers. Candidates must be have junior standing and must also be majoring in physics, chemistry, engineering, geology, biology, or environmental science. Scholarship awards are based on the applicant's academic achievement, career goals, leadership, and financial need. Information about the alliance is available on the website www.acil.org.
Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship. For junior-level students who will graduate within one year of application and who will pursue graduate studies in the liberal arts. The award is made on the basis of intellectual ability, personal promise, and documented financial need. Award consists of $2,000 to defray costs of applications and travel to graduate schools and up to $30,000 for graduate school support. Donald A. Strauss Scholarship. Candidates for this $10,000 scholarship are nominated based on outstanding leadership potential and demonstrated service to community. Open to juniors in the upper third of their class. A proposal for a community project to be completed during the applicant’s senior year is an essential part of the application. The UCSB Faculty Women's Club (FWC)
The UCSB Faculty Women's Club (FWC) will award several scholarships in fall 2009. Three scholarships will be for $1200; one, in memory of Mary Cheadle, will be for $2000. Current 2008-2009 full-time sophomores and juniors may apply. Applicants must have been enrolled at UCSB for at least three quarters, must submit a transcript showing grades for at least two quarters, and must plan to enroll full time at UCSB for 2009-2010. Minimum GPA is 3.70.
To apply, write a one-page statement describing your current and future goals, volunteer activities, work experience, honors societies and affiliations, and other pertinent information. Applications are due on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Please include an unofficial transcript through winter 2009 that includes your perm number (copies from GOLD are not acceptable), local address, phone number, and e-mail address where you can be reached during April, May, and summer 2009. Include your permanent address and phone number as well, and put your name on all documents you submit.
Send applications to FWC Scholarship Committee, 731 El Rancho Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93108. Winners of the 2009-2010 scholarships need to verify their enrollment for fall 2009 and attend the presentation ceremony in the fall. Students who have applied in the past may re-submit applications.
Jeanette Rankin Foundation grants $2,000 awards to mature women to further their education. The first woman elected to Congress, Jeannette Rankin, championed suffrage, peace, and democracy. The foundation named in her honors makes wards annually to undergraduate students with limited financial resources. Applicants must be at least 35 years old. Morris K. Udall Scholarships. The Udall Foundation awards eighty undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to college sophomores and juniors in the current academic year who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment, to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, or to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care. The Jack Cooke Graduate Scholarship. The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding students from across the nation. UCSB may nominate up to two seniors or alumni who have graduated since May 2004 and have yet to start their graduate studies. The awards provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books up to $50,000 annually for a maximum of six years. Scholarship length and amounts will vary for each recipient based on several factors, including costs to the institution the recipient attends and the degree sought. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or abroad in pursuit of a graduate or professional degree including medicine, law, or business.
