About the Peer Mentorship Program

The Peer Mentorship Program, started in Fall of 1998, is entering its eleventh year as a part of the UCSB Honors Program. The program pairs entering first-year honors students ("peers") with current honors students ("mentors"), who help ease the transition into college life. The interaction among members of these peer groups is designed to be informal. To facilitate a friendly relationship between peers and mentors, the Honors Program encourages students to meet a few times throughout the quarter for social activities, schedule planning, and academic assistance.

A university-level education consists of much more than simply academic knowledge.

Students' learning involves interpersonal communication skills; balancing a social life with work, academics, and other co-curricular activities; and self-discovery. Spending time with people who share similar goals and interests provides students with a support network and opportunities for personal development.

Every attempt is made to match new students with current students who have similar majors, career interests, and social interests. In this way, having a mentor is like having a friend waiting for new students when they arrive. Mentors and peers will have a chance to contact each other by phone or e-mail before fall quarter begins, and then meet formally at a group social activity once the quarter begins.

By participating in this program, current honors students have the opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge with new students. It allows mentors to give back to their honors community. This experience is beneficial to the mentors because they have the opportunity to assist new students and at the same time become more familiar with campus policies, procedures, and opportunities for involvement. In addition, mentors are able to develop or refine their leadership skills, which will be useful in any future career.
