The Community Service Requirement

Students planning to complete the College Honors Program and earn the Academic Excellence Award at graduation must complete volunteer service in addition to meeting GPA and honors units requirements. Students must volunteer at least 10 hours of campus or community service during each of their final two years of enrollment at UCSB (for a total of 20 hours).

The College Honors Program believes that exploring the world around you is an essential part of your undergraduate education, which includes activity both inside and outside the classroom. Community service provides a means to expand your intellectual development and diversify your personal experience. Volunteering can also help you define your interests and strengths and supplement your in-class learning. It can open pathways into new careers and help you build an impressive resume. Volunteering also provides an opportunity to meet new people with similar interestes and values, and affords you the chance to make a difference in your community.

Verifying Community Service

In order for the honors program staff to verify completion of the community service requirement, you will need to turn in a Service Agreement form indicating the number of hours of service you have completed for each activity. The form will need to be signed by you and your supervisor. You can pick up a blank service agreement form at the College office, 1117 Cheadle, or you can download a copy (PDF) here.

College Honors Program/Isla Vista School Tutoring Program

tutoring_imageMake a difference in a student's life - become a tutor in an sixth-grade class at Isla Vista elementary school.

The College Honors Program sponsors a tutoring program with Isla Vista School. Tutors will meet weekly with a sixth-grade student, helping them prepare to make the transition to junior high. All it takes is two hours a week to help a student gain academic and social skills. And tutoring fulfills the service requirement.

Prospective tutors must have a LiveScan background check performed before they can begin tutoring. The tutoring coordinator will hold an information meeting at the beginning of fall quarter and will explain the weekly tutoring responsibility and application criteria.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor and would like more information, please contact the Tutoring Coordinator Kirsten Dansey, by email at ivtutoring@LTSC.ucsb.edu.
